Review Squire of Truth
Oh my goodness, Squire of Truth was a delightful reunion! As a huge fan of Jill Williamson's Blood of Kings trilogy, stepping back into Er'Rets felt like coming home. This isn't just a spin-off; it's a continuation, a carefully woven thread that picks up familiar themes and introduces captivating new characters. I absolutely loved reconnecting with Achan and Vrell – their witty banter and undeniable chemistry are as sparkling as ever. Seeing them through Cole's eyes, witnessing their established dynamic from a fresh perspective, added a whole new layer of enjoyment.
Cole himself is an absolute sweetheart. His quiet strength, his internal struggle with past failures, and his unwavering determination to do good, even when burdened by self-doubt, made him incredibly relatable and deeply sympathetic. He's the kind of hero you root for, not because he's flawless, but because his flaws make him so wonderfully human. His quiet resilience in the face of overwhelming odds is both inspiring and heartwarming. The way he uses music as a coping mechanism and a source of strength is beautifully portrayed – it's a subtle yet powerful element of his character.
And then there's Mistel! She's vibrant, stubborn, and fiercely independent. Her sharp wit and playful banter with Cole create a delightful energy. Her determination to forge her own path, both in her musical career and in the investigation, is admirable. I loved the dynamic between her and Cole; their shared passion for music acts as a bridge that allows their individual strengths to complement one another. Their interactions are funny, flirtatious, and ultimately very endearing. The slow burn of their burgeoning relationship is perfectly paced, leaving you eager for more.
The mystery itself was cleverly plotted, keeping me guessing until the very end. The sinister web of secrets and sorcery introduced a thrilling layer of danger, escalating the stakes and keeping the tension high. The inclusion of dark magic felt natural within the established world, enhancing the overall atmosphere without feeling forced or jarring. It also cleverly connected to the existing Blood of Kings lore, satisfying longtime readers while still being accessible to newcomers.
While the book was incredibly enjoyable, I did share the common sentiment among readers: I wanted more. More backstory on certain aspects of Er'Rets' history. More scenes showcasing Cole and Mistel's developing relationship. More Achan and Vrell! The ending, while satisfying in some respects, left me with a multitude of burning questions and a desperate need for the next installment. But that, of course, is the mark of a truly captivating story – it leaves you wanting more, craving further adventures in this enchanting world. Ultimately, Squire of Truth is a fantastic addition to the Blood of Kings universe, a must-read for fans of the original trilogy and a compelling introduction for newcomers. It's a magical blend of mystery, romance, and fantasy that left me utterly charmed.
